Quantitative RA/RV Function Calculator

Quantitative RA/RV Function Calculator

Clinical tool for guideline-based assessment of right heart morphology and systolic function according to the 2025 ASE guidelines. Enables right atrial volume indexation and comprehensive multiparametric analysis of right ventricular function.

TAPSE Reference Values

  • Normal: > 17 mm
  • Mildly reduced: 13–17 mm
  • Severely reduced: < 10 mm

(Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion — Right Ventricular Function)

TAPSE: Clinical Significance and Measurement (ASE 2025)

Definition and Clinical Role: TAPSE (Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion) is the most widely used parameter for assessing right ventricular (RV) systolic function in clinical echocardiography. It reflects the longitudinal shortening of the RV measured in M-mode and correlates well with RVEF and RV stroke volume.

Measurement Technique (ASE)

  • Acquire an apical 4-chamber view (RV-focused).
  • Place the M-mode cursor through the lateral tricuspid annulus (ultrasound beam as parallel as possible to longitudinal motion).
  • Measure the maximal systolic excursion from the end-diastolic baseline.
  • Average at least 3 consecutive cardiac cycles.

Cut-off: A TAPSE < 17 mm is abnormal and an independent predictor of increased mortality (e.g., in heart failure and pulmonary hypertension).

Advantages

  • Simple, rapid, and highly reproducible

Limitations

  • Angle-dependent (underestimation if the beam is not aligned)
  • Reflects only longitudinal function; may be misleading in regional dysfunction or after cardiac surgery (e.g., pericardiotomy)

RV–PA Coupling

The TAPSE/PASP ratio (normal > 0.4 mm/mmHg) reflects right ventricular–pulmonary arterial coupling. A reduced ratio indicates a mismatch between RV contractile function and pulmonary vascular load and is associated with increased mortality.
