LVEF and LV Dimensions: Clinical Significance
The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is the central parameter for assessing systolic LV function and forms the basis of heart failure classification. This calculator supports comprehensive 2D echocardiographic assessment per ASE/EACVI.
Simpson Biplane Method (preferred technique)
LVEF by Simpson biplane is considered the gold standard after 3D EF assessment: measure end-diastolic (EDV) and end-systolic (ESV) volumes in 4-chamber and 2-chamber views. LVEF = (EDV − ESV) / EDV × 100%. This method is relatively geometry-independent and reliable even in the presence of regional wall motion abnormalities.
LV Hypertrophy and Wall Thickness (ASE 2015)
Wall thickness >11 mm in men and >10 mm in women is considered abnormally increased. While these thresholds represent an important warning sign, left ventricular mass index (LVMI) is the gold standard for diagnosing hypertrophy.
Only the combination of LVMI and relative wall thickness (RWT) allows proper morphological classification into concentric or eccentric hypertrophy (even in the presence of normal wall thickness) and concentric remodeling.
LA Volume Index
An LA volume index > 34 mL/m² is considered elevated and is an important marker of chronically increased LV filling pressures and atrial fibrillation risk.
